Paving in a Very Small Town
Asphalt paving in Atlanta is small-scale work in a small place. The town covers about a third of a square mile and had 712 residents at the 2020 census. It began as three neighboring settlements, Spargerville, Shielville and Buena Vista, whose earliest part was laid out in 1834, and it has carried the Atlanta name since 1885. Atlanta had 1,000 people in 1900 and 479 in 1940, so most houses here are older and most driveways have been redone at least once.
What older driveways here need
Many driveways in town are short, single-car width and close to the street. When they fail, the cause is usually age and a thin base rather than heavy traffic. A replacement with a compacted stone base and 2 to 3 inches of asphalt will outlast the original by years. Where the base is still firm, patching and a sealcoat may be enough for now.
Gravel conversions
On the edge of town and on farms nearby, gravel driveways are common. Paving one cuts dust and mud and makes snow removal easier. We check the stone you already have and reuse what we can.
Small jobs welcome
Some contractors pass on small driveways or charge a large minimum. HomeGuide notes that some set minimums of $2,000 or more for driveway paving. We quote small jobs on their own merits and can sometimes pair them with nearby work to keep the cost reasonable.
Historic building in town
The Roads Hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. Older commercial buildings and churches in town often have small lots or side parking that can be patched, sealed and restriped.
Making a small driveway last
For short driveways, the details that matter most are the edges and the street end. Edges left unsupported crumble into the lawn, and the street end takes every turn of the wheel. We backfill the edges with soil after paving and make sure the base under the apron end is fully compacted.
Gravel lanes nearby
Farms around Atlanta often have long gravel lanes. If yours is used daily, paving it cuts dust in summer and mud in spring, and plowing is easier. Existing stone that is clean and deep can be reused as base, which keeps cost down.
Maintenance after paving
After a new driveway has cured for 3 to 6 months, a first sealcoat protects it, and cracks should be sealed as they appear. That routine is inexpensive and doubles as a yearly check-up.
Weather and timing
We pave from late spring through early fall, when the ground is warm and dry, and seal in dry weather between roughly 50 and 95 degrees. If a forecast turns, we move the job rather than pave on wet ground.
Talking to the town
Atlanta is small enough that street and right-of-way questions are usually quick to answer. If your project touches the street or apron, we check with the town before scheduling. Call (463) 283-5412 or

Atlanta Questions
Will you take on a small single-car driveway?
Yes. We quote small jobs individually, and when we have other work nearby we can sometimes schedule together to keep mobilization costs down.
Is patching worth it on an old driveway?
If most of the driveway is firm and the damage is in a few spots, yes. If it is cracked and sinking all over, patching will not keep up and replacement is better value.
Can you pave a farm driveway outside town?
Yes. We pave rural drives and lanes around Atlanta, reusing existing stone as base where it is in good shape.
How long does a small driveway take?
Usually one day of tear-out and paving after the 811 locate is complete, then a few days before driving on it.
Do you need to talk to the town before paving?
If the work stays on your property, usually not. If it touches the street or the apron, we check with the town first.
How much does a small driveway cost?
HomeGuide's national range for a 200-square-foot driveway is $1,000 to $2,400, though some contractors set minimums of $2,000 or more. Tear-out and base work add to that. Your written estimate is the price.
