Town Lots and Wide-Open Parcels
Asphalt paving in Lapel covers more variety than the town's size suggests. Lapel was platted in 1876 by David Conrad and Samuel Busby when the railroad reached the site, and it had 2,325 residents in 2020. Yet the town covers 10.37 square miles, because its limits take in a lot of undeveloped land to the south. That means driveways here range from short in-town drives to long lanes on large parcels.
Creeks and drainage
Stony Creek passes just north of town, and Mud Creek rises in the undeveloped southern part. Flat ground near the headwaters of a creek tends to be wet, especially in spring. Before paving we look at where water goes on your lot and test the subgrade. On wet ground, a thicker compacted stone base and careful grading are what make a driveway last through freeze-thaw.
Gravel to asphalt
On larger lots, many driveways are still gravel. Converting one usually makes sense where the drive is used daily and dust, mud or snow plowing is a problem. Existing stone can often be reused as base if it is deep and clean enough.
In-town replacements
In the older part of town along State Road 13, which runs through the center as Pendleton Avenue, homes have shorter driveways that are simpler to replace or resurface. We check whether the work reaches the street or sidewalk and confirm any town requirements before scheduling.
Roads and traffic
State Road 32 runs along the town's northern border. Homes and businesses with driveways onto state routes may need an Indiana Department of Transportation driveway permit for changes to the access; INDOT handles private and commercial driveway permits on state highways. We flag this at the estimate.
Paving a long lane
A long rural lane is mostly about the base and the edges. We restore a crown or cross slope so water runs off to the sides, compact the stone, and pave with a firm edge supported by soil or stone. Turnarounds and parking areas get a heavier section because that is where tires twist the surface.
New homes on open land
When a new house goes up on a large parcel, the driveway is often the longest paved surface on the property. Building it right the first time, with a firm subgrade and a full stone base, avoids costly repairs a few winters later. We can also pave a stone construction drive later, once the builder's heavy trucks are gone.
Steady growth
Lapel grew from 2,068 residents in 2010 to 2,325 in 2020, and new homes have been built on some of the open land. New construction driveways need a firm subgrade and a full-depth base before paving, and we can coordinate timing with your builder. Call (463) 283-5412 or

Lapel Questions
Do I need a state permit for a driveway on State Road 13 or 32?
Changes to a driveway connection on a state highway generally go through an INDOT driveway permit. Replacing the asphalt on your own lot behind the right-of-way usually does not. We tell you at the estimate which applies.
Our lot is wet in spring. Can we still pave?
Yes, with the right base. We dig out soft areas, add compacted stone and grade the surface to drain. Paving itself is done when the ground has firmed up.
How much does a long gravel-to-asphalt conversion cost?
It depends on length, width and how much existing stone can be reused. HomeGuide's national range for standard asphalt is $5 to $12 or more per square foot; reusing good stone helps. You get a written quote.
Can you coordinate with our home builder?
Yes. We schedule paving after heavy construction traffic is done so the new driveway is not damaged.
How long does a long lane take to pave?
Usually two to four days depending on length and base work, after the 811 locate is complete.
Can we leave the construction drive as gravel and pave later?
Yes. Many owners do that. We regrade and compact the existing stone, add more where needed and pave once construction traffic ends.
