More Than Fresh Paint
Line striping marks parking stalls, accessible spaces, drive lanes, arrows, crosswalks and fire lanes on asphalt and concrete lots. Faded lines cost a lot in practical terms: drivers park crooked, fit fewer cars, and ignore lanes they cannot see. On a freshly paved or sealed lot, striping is the last step and the one customers notice.
Restriping and the ADA
According to the U.S. Department of Justice's guidance on restriping, when a lot is restriped it must meet the 2010 ADA Standards for accessible parking. That covers the number of accessible spaces based on the lot's total count, at least one van-accessible space for every six accessible spaces, access aisles beside the spaces, and signs mounted so their bottom edge is at least 60 inches above the ground. Accessible spaces and aisles also have to be nearly level, with slopes no steeper than 1:48. We count spaces and check the layout before painting, so the new lines do not lock in an old problem.
New layouts
After a lot is reconstructed or expanded, it needs a fresh layout. We plan stall widths, aisle widths, traffic flow and accessible spaces, mark them out, and paint. HomeGuide notes that a new layout typically costs 20 to 50 percent more than restriping existing lines because of the planning and layout time.
Paint and timing
We use traffic paint suited to asphalt and allow freshly sealed surfaces to cure before striping. Paint needs dry pavement and mild temperatures, so most striping in central Indiana runs from spring into fall. Small lots can often be done early morning or in the evening so businesses do not have to close.
What gets marked
- Standard stalls, angled or 90 degree
- Accessible and van-accessible spaces with aisles and symbols
- Directional arrows and stop bars
- Crosswalks and fire lanes
- Curb paint and stenciled numbers or words
Fire lanes and local requirements
Fire lanes, curb markings and no-parking zones are often set by the local fire department or municipality. If your lot needs them, we ask what has been required and paint to that layout. HomeGuide prices fire lanes and crosswalks at $35 to $75 each and curb painting at $0.75 to $1 per linear foot.
Accessible signage
Painted symbols alone do not satisfy the ADA. Each accessible space needs a sign mounted with its bottom edge at least 60 inches above the ground, and van spaces need a van-accessible sign. We can point out missing signs during the estimate.

4. Reopen
Areas reopened once the paint has dried.

Line Striping Questions
How many accessible spaces does my lot need?
It depends on the total number of spaces, under the table in the 2010 ADA Standards. For example, a lot with 1 to 25 spaces needs at least one, and one of every six accessible spaces must be van-accessible. We count your lot and tell you what applies.
How often should a lot be restriped?
When lines are faded enough that drivers stop following them, and every time the lot is sealcoated, since sealer covers the old paint.
Can you stripe while we are open?
Usually, by working in sections or outside business hours. Paint dries quickly in warm weather.
Do you stripe concrete lots too?
Yes. The paint and prep differ slightly, but the layout rules are the same.
Can you add numbered or reserved spaces?
Yes. Stenciled numbers and words such as RESERVED or VISITOR are painted after the lines; HomeGuide prices stencils at $2 to $5 per letter or number.
