A Driveway Built From the Ground Up
Asphalt driveway paving covers new driveways on new lots, full replacement of worn-out ones, and gravel-to-blacktop conversions. It is the right job when the existing surface is past saving: wide cracks in a pattern like alligator skin, ruts in the tire paths, soft spots that give underfoot, or edges breaking off into the grass. Those signs point to a base that has lost its strength, and only digging down to it fixes them.
Why the base matters so much here
Central Indiana sits on glacial till. Common soils such as Crosby hold a perched water table within 6 to 24 inches of the surface through winter and spring, according to USDA soil descriptions. Wet clay-rich ground pushes up when it freezes and goes soft when it thaws. A driveway laid on that ground without enough compacted stone flexes every time a car rolls over it, and cracks follow.
HomeGuide gives the standard residential section as 6 to 8 inches of compacted gravel under 2 to 3 inches of asphalt, with 8 to 10 inches of base and 3 to 4 inches of asphalt for heavier vehicles. We probe the subgrade before quoting, and if we find soft areas we write in undercutting and stone replacement as its own line so you can see why it is there.
Drainage decides how long it lasts
Water that sits on asphalt or runs under its edge does more damage than traffic. We set the driveway to fall away from the garage and toward the lawn or the street, avoid creating birdbaths at the apron, and pay attention to downspouts that dump onto the pavement. Where a driveway crosses a roadside ditch in a rural township, the culvert under it matters too, and we check its size and condition before paving over it.
Removing the old driveway
Tear-out means breaking up the old asphalt or concrete, loading it and hauling it away. Old asphalt is commonly recycled into new mix and base material. Before any digging we file an Indiana 811 locate; since January 1, 2025, state law requires at least two full working days' notice before excavation, so that step is built into the schedule.
Gravel to blacktop
Many older and rural homes around Hamilton County still have gravel drives. Converting one starts with checking whether the existing stone is thick, clean and compacted enough to serve as base. Often some of it can stay, topped up and regraded; mud-mixed stone has to come out.
HOA and street considerations
In subdivisions, covenants sometimes set driveway materials or widths. Where the work reaches the apron, curb or sidewalk in the public right-of-way, the city or town has a say as well. We raise both at the estimate so the schedule allows for any approvals.
