Old Town Charm, New Subdivisions
Asphalt paving in Pendleton runs from historic downtown lots to new subdivisions on the edges of town. Pendleton was platted in 1830 and named for Thomas Pendleton, and it incorporated as a town in 1854. The Pendleton Historic District is on the National Register, and Falls Park along Fall Creek marks the site of the town's earliest history. Meanwhile, the population grew from 3,873 in 2000 to 4,717 in 2020, and newer homes have filled in around the I-69 corridor.
Historic district driveways
Older homes in the historic district often have narrow driveways, shared alleys or garages set far back on the lot. Over the years these get patched and overlaid until they sit higher than the garage floor or the yard. We usually recommend removing old layers and rebuilding at the right height. Smaller equipment helps on tight lots.
Newer neighborhoods
Newer homes around town have driveways that are mostly in the first half of their lives. This is the time for preventive work: sealing cracks before they widen, a sealcoat when the surface grays, and attention to any low spot where water stands after rain.
Fall Creek and wet ground
Fall Creek passes just west of downtown on its way to the White River. Properties close to the creek and in low areas around town can have wet subsoil, which is hard on pavement in freeze-thaw season. We probe the subgrade before quoting and build a thicker stone base where the ground is soft.
Roads and access
Interstate 69 runs along Pendleton's northern side, State Road 38 runs through the center as State Street, and State Road 67 also serves the town. Businesses along these routes need lots that handle steady traffic and occasional trucks, and we offer phased overlays and repairs so lots stay open.
The I-69 growth corridor
With I-69 running along the north side of town, Pendleton has seen new homes and businesses in recent years. New construction driveways here need the same care as anywhere: a firm subgrade, a full-depth compacted stone base and paving after heavy construction traffic is done.
A historic-district example
A common request near downtown is an older driveway that runs beside the house to a detached garage, with an alley at the back. The asphalt is several layers thick and higher than the garage slab. The work is to break out the layers, dig out soft soil near the garage, rebuild the base, and pave so the surface drops slightly away from the garage door.
Timing your project
Hot-mix paving runs best from late spring to early fall. Crack sealing is ideal in late summer and early fall, before the first freeze.
Questions to ask any paving quote
Ask for the base depth and compacted asphalt thickness in writing, whether soft areas will be dug out, how edges will be finished and when the first sealcoat should happen.

Pendleton Questions
My historic-district driveway sits higher than the garage floor. Can that be fixed?
Yes. We remove the old layers down to a proper base and rebuild at the right height, so water does not run into the garage and the transition is flush.
Our driveway is about 10 years old. What should we do now?
Seal the cracks before winter and sealcoat when the surface turns gray. That is the cheapest way to make a driveway last.
Do properties near Fall Creek need a different build?
Often a thicker stone base, because the subsoil can be wetter. We test the ground at the estimate and price that in only where it is needed.
Do you pave business lots along State Road 38?
Yes, including overlays, patching, sealing and restriping, phased to keep the lot open.
Can you pave a shared alley approach?
If the alley belongs to the town, work there goes through the town. If it is a private shared drive, we can quote it with your neighbors and split the cost.
